Program Description

The Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) seeks qualified temporary non-tenure track, part-time Instructors for Summer 2024 to teach in the Pre-College Academy (PCA), a six-week college-preparatory summer program hosted by EAOP at the University of California, Berkeley. EAOP partners with schools, districts, community organizations, and families to empower underserved students and prepare them for college and career success. For over 35 years, PCA has provided intensive academic enrichment for EAOP students from partner high schools throughout the Bay Area. PCA prepares students for academic success in the following school year, including excellence in classes that meet the University of California’s A-G subject requirements and enrollment in Honors and Advanced Placement courses.

PCA offers students rigorous coursework, college-style expectations, and an environment of challenging academic camaraderie. Students will commit to a Writing and Math course (Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus). The Writing courses are theme-based, drawing on a range of academic disciplines. Examples of courses taught in the past include: Free Me Fast: The {potentially} Liberating Linguistics of Rap, In Search Of The Self Through a Critically Analytical Lens, Decolonizing the Classroom: Radical Healing and Empowering Education, Language, Culture, and Power: Mixtape of an Activist. Additionally, students attend weekly activity sessions that may include team building, leadership activities, and college advising.

Teaching Responsibilities/Work Schedule

We are seeking outstanding instructors who can teach courses in EAOP’s Pre-College Academy, grades 9–11. Successful candidates will create and implement an exciting theme-based writing course geared toward high school students who have completed their 9th and 10th-grade years or facilitate one to two math courses. Instructors' duties include planning lessons that target specific skills and concepts, managing the classroom to keep all students engaged in the lesson, development of midterm exams and final projects, grading, and providing individual support and feedback to the students. Primary job duties will take place at UC Berkeley.  Instructors will work in a team along with a Teaching Assistant. All instructors will attend training sessions before the start of the program and participate in all student programing in PCA. Instructors will be responsible for the following activities: 

  • Creates and implements an exciting math or theme-based writing course geared toward high school students who have completed their 9th and 10th grade years. This includes the designing of the course and creation of all course-related materials including but not limited to: syllabus, course calendar, reader, assignments, projects, etc. Instructor will submit a draft course outline and syllabus to the Associate Director of Academic Enrichment and Co DCAC/EAOP Director for review.
  • Attends and participates in the following meetings and trainings: Faculty Orientation, Faculty/Staff Retreat, Student/Family Orientation, and all other educational and recreational PCA activities.
  • Reviews student diagnostic tests and apply results to course design.
  • Submit supplies and materials requests on time to the Academic Program Coordinator.
  • Teaches two sections of class: Monday through Thursday. Morning classes will take place from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM each day, and afternoon classes from 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM. Each section has approximately 25 students.
  • Enters (or ensures that teaching assistants enter) attendance on time each day.
  • Supervises work of teaching assistants and provides appropriate professional development, as agreed. This includes supporting teaching assistants in leading activities/lessons as appropriate throughout the program
  • Submits progress reports and comments on each student’s progress throughout PCA. Assigns and submits mid-session and final grades on time.
  • Offers tutoring and additional academic support to students when necessary.
  • Attends weekly staff meetings (day and time TBA).
  • Participates in a post-program PCA debrief session.
  • Host lunch and afternoon office hours
  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications (at the time of application)

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent international degree.

Preferred Qualifications (by start date)

  • Teaching credential, or substantial experience with secondary education
  • Experience and/or substantial understanding of Project-Based Learning approaches to education
  • Experience with curriculum development
  • Experience with basic research methodologies
  • Ability to teach courses in an intensive, fast-paced schedule
  • Cross-cultural awareness and understanding of issues faced by low-income, first-generation students
  • Passion for teaching underrepresented students

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check. This position is a Mandated Reporter under California law, and the successful candidates will be required to complete the UC course for Mandated Reporters.

Salary

This is a six-week teaching appointment beginning on May 29, 2024, approximately 35–40 hours/week, with $8,000 financial compensation for the limited appointment duration. Pre-program duties will also be required on May 29th, in June, and one final meeting at the end of July.
