Jenny Franchot Scholarship

The Jenny Franchot Berkeley Scholarship honors the memory of Jenny Franchot, an English professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who was a distinguished scholar of American literature and an extraordinary teacher with a particular concern for the study of spirituality and its integration into intellectual life. 

Award

A $1,000 prize will be awarded to one winner from each school site, awarded directly to the student.

Eligibility

All 12th-grade students enrolled at a EAOP & DCAC partner high school who are bound to  community college or 4-year institution.

Requirements (Essay + Biography)

1. Essay

Students will write an essay that must be a minimum of 500 words and a maximum of 1000 words, typed, and double-spaced, responding to this topic:

Spirituality comes in many different forms. Pick a particular moment from a book or story that you have read and discuss why that moment seems spiritual to you and/or what spiritual issues it raises.

2. Biography

A one-page biography of the essay writer must accompany each submission

Essays missing this information will not be judged. Only one essay per student will be judged. Essays must be written in English.
