Program Overview

The Pre-College Academy (PCA) is a six-week college preparatory summer program hosted by EAOP at the University of California, Berkeley.  For 30 years PCA has provided intensive preparation for EAOP students enrolled in partner schools throughout the Bay Area.  PCA prepares students for their academic and professional futures by providing them with the opportunity to share in the University of California's tradition of educational excellence and diversity.  PCA prepares students for success in the following academic year, including preparation for classes that meet the University of California's and California State University's A-G subject requirements.

Course Information

PCA offers students rigorous coursework, college-level expectations and a chance to join a community of college bound scholars.  Participants in the program take two classes, one in a theme-based writing course and a second course in math (Geometry, Advanced Algebra, Pre-Calculus).  Recent writing course titles include Critical Media Literacy; Living in the Shadows: Race, Gender & Identity Politics in the United States; Zombie Apocalypse: A Post-Apocalyptic Study of Modern America.  Students are enrolled in the math level that will be taking in their schools the following fall.

Admission Requirements

PCA can accommodate a limited number of students. The selection process is designed to select a group of highly qualified and engaged students. For acceptance, students must demonstrate academic qualifications and/or participation in EAOP activities during the regular school year. Students must have a minimum 2.50 GPA in their academic coursework. They must also attend an EAOP partner school.

Program Dates, Location And Cost

PCA takes place between the middle of June and the end of July every year. Students take classes four days a week, Monday through Thursday. All PCA program activities take place on the UC Berkeley campus.

Students do not pay for program fees. Students are required to pay for transportation, but BART and AC Transit subsidies are available participants who qualify for financial assistance. Lunch is not provided to students.

Co-Curricular Activities and Leadership Academy

In addition to coursework, PCA students participate in co-curricular activities designed to build community amongst the students, faculty and staff.  Recent activities have included the PCA Amazing Race (campus scavenger hunt), PCA Talent Show, and the PCA Extravanganza (outdoor festival with games and food).

Second year PCA students also have the option to enroll in the Leadership Academy.  This group of students meet twice a week during PCA to explore what it means to be a leader and how to translate their leadership skills into action. Leadership Academy students also go on an overnight camping trip one weekend during PCA.
